CIC-Zero Carbon Park (CIC-ZCP) is the first zero carbon building in Hong Kong developed by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) in collaboration with the HKSAR Government. Established in June 2012, CIC-ZCP is an exhibition, education and information centre for low/zero carbon building design and technologies, smart city technologies, as well as low carbon living. As a pioneering and inspiring project, CIC-ZCP not only serves as a knowledge sharing platform for the industry practitioners, but also helps raise community’s awareness of low carbon living.
Challenge
The IoT project originated from a smart energy construction project. As the building aims to demonstrate how Intelligent Building Management System could educate the public and the industry about the energy usage and carbon footprint offset showcase, however almost no vendor could be found for implementing the energy dashboard to visualize necessary data to illustrate overall complexity of energy usage. It is because the market software houses are not in common to integrate the BAC Net Protocol over the Building Management System.
Solutions
With experience in IoT projects and 3rd party system integration, QBS has demonstrated good development work for 3rd party systems integration activities so as to connect the Building Management System by monitoring devices’ data and visualize in a layman way. The first Web-based Energy Dashboard with native BACnet communication since 2012 in Zero Carbon Building in Hong Kong, cooperating with Siemens Hong Kong. The dashboard visualizes power and energy data from building automation systems using a native, standard BMS protocol. It is suited for retrofit into existing systems or for new applications with seamless integration into existing BACnet networks.
It is an efficient and flexible digital dashboard integrated with popular building management systems (BMS) with computer-aided tools used by operators to monitor, control, and optimize the generation and transmission performance of working and living environments in terms of electric utility, CO2 emission, lighting, space cooling, equipment, and on-site renewable energy generation. By comparing the actual indicators with the benchmarks in an intuitive way, the technology enables proper utilization of energy and resources, with respect to people’s needs at different times and occasions, leading to significant drop in carbon dioxide emission and better environmental protection.
Impact
Consistent with governments’ policy guidance, and industry trends and standards such as BACnet, BEAMplus, & LEED ND, QBS GREEN is a new technology full of potential and significance. With QBS and its strategic partners, companies may adopt QBS GREEN to control its use of electricity, water, lighting, and interior air quality and gradually to develop renewable resource utilization systems. This not only saves operating costs for the companies, but also contributes to CSR, adding value to the companies’ reputation and long-term development.
